Suit Coat

I am inspired by pictures and like any good seamstress I love to recreate the clothing I see. When I saw these images on Pinterest I knew I wanted to be able to recreate them or create something like them. First needed to learn how to make a suit coat. This project forced me to work with new techniques, materials, and processes. This helped me to leave my comfort zone and try something new.

Inspiration

I love different and unique things in life. For the assignment to create a suit coat I took inspiration from these looks.

Sketch Ideas

My design ideas of possible suit coats. I ended up making two of them.

Patterning

I used a pattern from Vouge to start my process. It was challenging and I found suit coats to be more complicated than anticipated.

Techniques

I practiced the different technical parts of building a suit coat. Mainly the two part sleeve, the vent, and the collar/lapel. I wanted to make sure I knew how to complete them before creating the final product.

Final Suit Coat

Here I applied all my new techniques and created the final suit coat. I created a basic suit coat to first understand how suit coats function, to then have more artistic freedom with the next one.

Suit Coat Variation

With this suit coat I was able to take more artistic liberties. Here I widened the neckline to a boat and fattened the collar to give a better illusion of it falling off the shoulders.
